Why We Waited

It wasn't an easy decision, I'll tell you that.

Matty and I have been married for almost 3 months and though we've had the majority of our wedding photos for awhile now, we've been guarding them carefully. Partly because I have been advised to avoid spamming Instagram by my dear husband (and though I agree with him, can I just say how dang hard it was to not flood my feed with fluffy white-ness), but mostly because I wanted so desperately to use this platform to share the details of a day that was so magical to us.

We received our photos long before All the Delights was ready to go and for half a second I thought, "Forget it, let's just make a Facebook album," but I have to say, I'm really happy we waited.

During the time in between we've poured over these photos with our families and reminisced with laughter and a few tears, housing our wedding day in sweet conversations and memory. Until now, it's been just ours - our happy day in our corner of the world that belonged only to us and our family & friends. It's been a sweet time, really, to just let the day settle in. It's reminded me that our wedding was about me and him coming together in marriage...and not about revealing a dress on Instagram.

So now that I've adequately learned my lesson, I'm excited to finally share our day! I've felt a bit overwhelmed at where to begin, so let's just keep it simple and start with my favorite moments that I've kept so close these 75 days.

This was the moment that Matty saw his sister, Bryanna, for the first time, right before he walked down to take his place at the alter. I was standing to the right of them and couldn't see what was happening, but I could see Lauren, my sister and maid of honor. About two seconds after this photo was taken, Lauren teared up, looked at me and mouthed the words, "He's crying."  Later when I rounded the corner and everyone was out of sight, Lauren said to me, "If he cried when he saw his sister then what's he going to do when he sees you!"

I asked both my parents to walk me down the aisle for several reasons: I needed to lean on both of them (just as I have my entire life), I didn't want my mom to sit at the front by herself, and I thought maybe if we were all together we wouldn't cry so much. What I didn't anticipate was the soft ground and my big dress. Mom didn't realize she was walking on my dress and I kept pulling it up because I have been known to trip in situations when all eyes are on me. But that didn't bother me too much because I was with my parents and I was about to see Matty for the first time!

We didn't do a first look - it was basically never an option for us. When I got to him he kept shaking his head and he said, "You're so hot." I never spent too much time thinking about a wedding before I met Matty, but I did always know that I wanted my Papa to marry us. He's officiated all his children and my cousins so far, and I'm so thankful that Matty and I were added to his little tattered book of couples he's pastored and married.

We had our parents pray for us during the ceremony and this was particularly special to us because our families grew up in two separate continents, but both our parents and grandparents diligently prayed for our future spouses. Our families finally met a week before the wedding and it was love at first sight all around. This moment felt like the culmination of so many things.

I don't think I realized it until after the wedding, but every single person from my dad's side of the family was out our wedding. We were so thankful to every family member that came because we didn't make it easy. Only one of these people actually lives in Austin and because Matty's family is in Australia, we were quite emotional to see my family open their arms to his parents and siblings like we all belonged to each other. Also, look at Matty's face. That's the result of my cousin, Justin, saying something that I probably shouldn't repeat.

My sister, Rachel, everyone.

Besides Matty, these kids are the loves of my life! I was their nanny for 2 years in Brooklyn and proposed several times to Shane. He always said no, but I managed to get him in the wedding anyway. Hannah is full of spunk and makes friends with everyone. Seriously, I asked who her best friend was in her class and she said, "Everyone." It meant the world to me that they came to Austin with their parents to be in our wedding and I'll never get over how lucky I was to spend two years with their family.

The most common advice I received was to remember to take it all in. The day goes by just as fast as any other day, don't forget to just be there.

I remember feeling like a princess in this moment. A handsome Aussie man leading me through the woods and a huge bundle of skirts in my hands...it felt like a fairy tale, so I went with it.

The hours and hours (and hours) spent creating this backdrop was worth it just for this photo.

People always say, "You never eat at your own wedding!" to which I say, "YOU HAVEN'T MET ME." Matty and I are huge fans of local burger joint, P. Terry's, and we were delighted to find that their food truck fit nicely in our budget. While we were taking photos after the ceremony I noticed that the truck hadn't arrived yet and I started asking questions... Apparently the fiasco behind the scenes was that the truck broke down on the way to the venue. I'm pretty sure everyone was trying to keep me occupied but my stomach was growling and the guests were mingling and...suddenly I was aware that dinner had not arrived. Not long after, the truck pulled up behind a tow and our guests all cheered! I loved it. We immediately stuffed our faces and even had some time to relax while everyone went to get their food. It was pretty great and I ate every single fry because it's my wedding and I'm eating. We had several people thank us for that meal :)

This was something we couldn't have planned. It's been a particular rainy year for Texas and the weekend we married has been one of the few dry, sunny days. I was relieved! A dry day would have been enough but then the sun set like this and suddenly I was in a Jane Austen novel.

Remember how I said I didn't plan out my wedding before I met Matty? Well, I did know two things: that Papa would officiate and that I'd dance to "God Only Knows" with my dad.

Go ahead and take this all in. My awkward stance, my cousin's bemused face in the background, and my sisters on the mic... Would you ever guess that they were singing (and RAPPING) "Australian Boys" to the tune of Katy Perry's "California Girls" in front of 150 people? Yep, that's what's happening here.

There's a lot more to come for the Marry chapter. In addition to more of our favorite photos, I'll be sharing all the DIY tricks we learned, chatting about wedding party fashion and gifts, sharing about how to keep the sentiment the day, and even doing a few "Pinterest vs. Real Life" comparisons. That one's going to be fun...and brutally honest.
