“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
How fast can you think of 10 things you love right now?
About 2 years ago I asked myself this question (well, initially it was 20 things) and grabbed my journal to make a list. I posted my 20 things on Instagram because I was surprised at how light and thankful I felt and I thought maybe someone else might want to feel that way, too.
Now, whenever I feel the need to check in with myself I sit down and make a list of 10 things I love in that very moment. Honestly, you won't believe the way it makes you feel until you try it. I keep making lists because I keep hoping that I'll get faster and better at it - a sign that I've let thankfulness become the norm in my life.
The first list of 20 took more time than I care to share but I'm not too hard on myself because often I write a list when I'm not feeling particularly thankful. I know when I need it most...and if I'm honest, it probably wouldn't hurt to do it every day.
I like to share my lists because every time I do, someone else tries it. And they love it. It's up to you if you share or keep it personal, but know one thing: these lists are not about showing off. I never write them with the intention of sharing and actually, I sometimes feel a bit uncomfortable because I can be thankful for some really weird stuff. But that's what I love about putting it out there: it's honest and it's raw. It's the first 10 things that come to me and sometimes all of those things are food items. Which is when I self-edit and try to remember there is more to life than avocados and ice cream.
This week I was thinking that it would be nice to have a journal specifically for my 10 things lists. I decided it might be fun to make one, so I rummaged through my boxes of supplies and ended up with this watercolor, hand-stitched 20 pager. You know how sometimes your ideas just work? It felt so good to make something and I'm thinking about sharing a tutorial soon right here.
So now it's you're turn to try. Tag, you're it!
I'd love to see what you're loving because I believe that thankfulness is contagious. If you're on Instagram, take a photo of your list and tag it #10thingsIloverightnow - then challenge two friends to do the same.
We're in this together, after all.
